Over the past 6-7 months I have not been on social media. I decided around election time to take break because of the things I saw happening to me. While on Facebook, I found myself angry at people I had never met, enraged at the government, upset with my friends and family, and disappointed in Christians. It took me a long time to recognize that social media was causing these problems in my life. It wasn’t that the platform itself was the problem, but rather the way people (and ultimately Satan) used them to cause hatred and division in my life.
You may have noticed I also haven’t written on my blog since I decided to step away from social media. I want to start my blog back up because I feel that I have things I want to share with the world. However, I have no intention to join social media again (for now) because of the peace that I have found since being away from it.
I’m writing this blog to share one simple message about how Christians use social media: Don’t let Satan use you for his work. The saddest part about social media is that I believe Christians have taken something that could be so powerful in God’s hands, and allowed Satan to use it against us.
In John 13:2, John writes that the devil put the idea of betraying Jesus into Judas’ heart. Judas followed Jesus the entire time Jesus was teaching and helping people, yet he still allowed Satan to work through him. Today I think many people who have been following Jesus have allowed Satan to plant things in their hearts and it comes out all over social media.
My plea for those who read this is this: Don’t let Satan use you or your Facebook account. Don’t forget what we are fighting for. Don’t forget that this world is not our home. Don’t forget that Satan is trying to use you everyday. DON’T LET HIM!
I won’t beg you to step away from social media like I did. I won’t tell you it’s a sin to have a Facebook account. What I will tell you is this: Satan will try to use you and your posts everyday. Think before you post. Think before you comment. Ask yourself the simple, age old, question: “What would Jesus post?” If you intend to keep a social media account, I want to encourage you to let God use you instead of Satan.
Share spiritually uplifting things instead of gossip about the latest government scandal. Share a Bible verse instead of the latest Joe Biden quote. Share the message of Jesus and the cross instead of the message of hatred for other people.
Don’t let Satan use you or your social media for his work. Let God use you instead.
Remember that I love you, and God loves you.
