“I was one way, and now I am completely different.”

Last night, I had the privilege of starting the series “The Chosen” with some good friends (if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it). We sat and watched 3 episodes together, and there wasn’t one episode where my eyes didn’t fill with tears.

One scene in particular really made me step back and think about my life. The Pharisee, Nicodemus, and Mary of Magdala are talking about her new life change. Jesus had just cleansed her of the demons that oppressed her for so long. Nicodemus was trying to get Mary to talk about the whole thing and Mary made this statement: “All I know is I was one way and now I am completely different, and the only thing that happened in between was Him.

This statement alone brought tears to my eyes. Some of you may or may not know about my past. I lived a terrible life before becoming a Christian. I was a drunk, a party animal, and had no moral standard what so ever. My life was overflowing with sin. But now, I can look at my life and say “I was one way, and now I am completely different and the only thing that happened in between was Him.”

I’m not sure who will read this or where it will end up, but I’m sure of one thing: Jesus can change your life just like He changed Mary’s and just like He has changed mine. There is no amount of self-help books, counseling, or anything that will change your life the same way that Jesus can. I am living proof of that.

I hope if you’re reading this and you’re a Christian, you will stop what you’re doing and reflect on how Jesus has changed your life. Can you confidently say “I was one way, and now I am completely different”? If not, it may be that Jesus hasn’t changed your life the way you think He has. If you can say that, take a moment and praise God for what He’s done for you.

I hope these thoughts have encouraged you to see the greatness of Jesus and what He can do in your life if you will let Him.

Remember, I love you and God loves you.

  1. You may not know me, but I’ve been in law enforcement for nearly 20 years in and around where you grew up. I heard your name so many times over the radio that it was a household name among local agencies. I can’t tell you how proud it makes me to see you and other people turn their lives around. I have a very sincere conversation with folks I arrest, if they will listen. I ask what led them to where they are, how long they’ve been on that path and if they’ve ever sought out help and that it is never too late to turn things around.

How wonderful it will be to raise up a child with good examples on how to follow God even when its hard. We are counting on your generstion to bring young people back to God. I pray that daily as 4 of my grandaughters who were raised in Christian homes and have walked away.
